Famous Vegetarians

Think Vegetarianism is just a passing fad? Think again! There are hundreds of famous vegetarians of the present and the past. Here's some very interesting insights into the world of vegetarian celebrities.

Lea Michele

Lea Michele Sarfati, an American singer and actress, was born in New York in 1986, and started performing in Broadway musicals at the age of 8.

In 2009, Lea Michele won the role of Rachel Berry on the hit show Glee. One thing Lea Michele has in common with her character: they are both vegans committed to the ethical treatment of animals. Lea Michele, who is half-Italian, has said that eliminating animal products from her diet wasn’t easy. But her family is now very supportive, and her mother has even altered her traditional lasagna recipe so that Lea can also eat it. Although she is constantly disputing the misconception that she just eats grass, Lea Michele’s vegan diet allows her to maintain a healthy lifestyle and provides her with the energy she needs to sing and dance everyday on set. Lea is actively involved with PETA, speaking out against wearing fur and the cruelty of horse-drawn carriages. She has rescued several animals, and has two cats named Claude and Sheila that she found as stray kittens on the Paramount Studios lot. "I'm a really big animal lover," Michele adds. "My mother always said, 'Stand for something, or [you'll] fall for everything.' I feel like [animals] don't have a voice."

The Laziest Vegans Top Ten Asks Moby

Moby Photo by Sunny Khalsa

Back in 1996 I bought Everything is Wrong by Moby. As I read the liner notes, I had my first taste of what a Vegan was. Although I didn't go Vegan till 7 years later, those liner notes have stuck with me as one of my ah-ha moments. I will always credit Moby for getting 17 year-old John to start questioning some of the ideas I grew up with.

Fast forward 15 years and 7 albums, Moby is a legend. Yes, he has sold tons of albums and toured the world but he has also contributed time and money to countless charities. His newest album & accompanying book is called Destroyed. Moby describes the album as "broken down melodic electronic music for empty cities at 2 am". The book is a collection of photos Moby took while dealing with insomnia on tour.

And ok, I tried my best to not to go all fanboy and blab about how he autographed my Animal Rights CD in 2000 or how I made Melisser Elliott introduce me to him at her book signing last fall, but I fail! Now without further ado, Moby!
